Biography:

A  Scottish Heart

“A Scottish Heart” is a three-member band based in Bend, Oregon.  Comprised of Irene Goodnight on fiddle, Becky Duncan on piano, and Steve Allely on bodhran, tinwhistles, and Uillean pipes, the band has been arranging and performing traditional Scottish and Irish music since 1994.  Their performances range from small concerts at Royal Blend coffee shops, to large concerts at area high schools, and the Les Schwab amphitheater at Old Mill.  They have long played for local Scottish and contra dance groups at regular dances locally, and large regional Balls in Portland and Central Oregon.  They have been a featured band at all presentations of the Celtic Fling, and were founding members of this annual event.

The group’s music is crafted from the large repertoire of traditional music from the British Isles plus many originals written by band members – music based on dancing and folk music traditions of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and other areas.  Beginning with violinist/fiddler Irene Goodnight’s study of the large body of Celtic music, members of the group have spent much time attending Valley of the Moon Scottish music school, various workshops available in Portland, and California, and pouring over listening sources to develop the elusive traditional sound.

Weekly practices over time continue to keep it sharp.  Trips to Scotland, and sitting in on Irish sessions in New York have shown that the group’s music does fit in to “the real thing”.  And special arrangements for concert appearances demonstrate the group’s ability to create “outside” the tradition, giving individuality to “A Scottish Heart’s” sound.

The group also plays for demonstrations, weddings and special events.   Contact Irene Goodnight at 541 388-8872.
